5 Surprisingly Vegan Cereals

Ok, so I didn’t say healthy but these cereals are definitely vegan, proving it’s easy peasy to choose the plant based way.

5 Vegan Ice creams

This sunshine we’re having in the UK calls for only the best vegan ice-cream and British Supermarkets seem to have upped their game this year. Here’s a round up of some of my favourites.

Tesco Free From Strawberry and Vanilla Cones

IDShot_540x540-2

My current addiction. These taste just like the Wall’s of old school past. Not the best ingredient list but yummy all the same. http://www.tesco.com/groceries/

Swedish Glace

Swedish Glace have not only modernised their packaging, they’ve also expanded their range to include new flavours and these wonderful magnum-esque mini strawberry delights. You can find Swedish Glace in pretty much every supermarket.

Booja Booja

Ice-Cream-Slider

Not the cheapest of the lot but a delicious treat all the same. Try in a milkshake for extra decadence. Available from Ocado and health food stores. http://www.boojabooja.com/ice-cream/

Valsoia

Valsoia is a new brand on the block that I’m actually yet to try. Offering a varied range including Soya Ice Cream Sandwiches, Icecream stick and cones. I’ve heard great things and can’t wait to give them a go. Available from Ocado. http://www.valsoia.it

Almond Dream

61686_almond-dream

Made with Almond Milk , my favourite flavours are definitely the Praline Crunch and Salted Caramel. Treat yourself and serve with a homemade cookie or two. Available from Asda, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. http://www.mydairyfreedream.com

Current Favourites

IMG_2700

Some current favourites. Mostly food related but a few non foodie items just to mix it up a little.

TREK bars

IMG_2703

From those great guys at Natural Balance. The Cocoa Chaos is my favourite flavour, followed closely by Peanut Power. I buy in bulk because I have been eating these on a daily basis for pretty much 6 months now and am still not bored of them. https://www.naturalbalancefoods.co.uk

Twinings Camomile and Spiced Apple Tea

IMG_2702

I’ve been trying to cut down on after dinner treats and this is just about filling the spot. A great calming pre bedtime drink which smells delicious. http://www.twinings.com/home.php

Fleetwood Mac Rumours

IMG_2710

Just about anyone who knows me, knows that this album is my all time favourite. From start to finish, this is a work of art. Each track is beautiful, moving and meaningful. This is pretty much on heavy rotation in my house.  And if you haven’t see the behind the scenes making of this album, you are missing out. http://fleetwoodmac.com

Listology – Your Life in Lists

IMG_2712

I was given this as a birthday present last year and only now getting back into it. As someone who is trying to appreciate the little things and also someone who’s open to a bit of self discovery, it’s the perfect entertaining vehicle. List topics range from the simple,  favourite movies, bands and teachers to the rather deeper,  ways you’ve changed since you were a teen and the things people should remember you for.  Sappy but joyful. http://listography.com/static/books/start.html

Rude Health Brown Rice Drink

IMG_2815

A rediscovered favourite , this milk alternative is naturally sweet, of course dairy free and perfect for Sunday morning Lattes. http://rudehealth.com

Meridian Almond Butter

IMG_2705

This is such a treat and am starting to controversially love this more than it’s Peanut buttery friend. Perfect for smoothies, bagels, overnight oats and my personal favourite – pimped up porridge. http://www.meridianfoods.co.uk

I hope you found this interesting. What are some of your current favourites?

Bird’s Eye Review: The Vegan Kind December 15 box

Been a bit slack on The Vegan Kind reviews of late but here is a look at my December box:

1.Harper’s Christmas Candle

I love this candle and this is now the second one that I have received in The Vegan Kind Box.  Lovely smell that helped me to get into the festive spirit but also takes me nicely into the New Year.

http://harperscandles.com

2. Cocoa Libre Chocolates

These were delicious.  The exact right ratio of chocolate to mint. Will definitely be ordering again.

http://www.cocoalibre.co.uk

3. Nakd Christmas Pud bar

A flavour of Nakd bar that I haven’t yet tried?  That’s an achievement.   This bar contains dates, cashews, raisins and some natural flavourings. I’m not a big fan of Christmas Pudding to be honest, so it wasn’t my favourite flavour but it did have a nice citrus tang and nostalgic Christmas taste!

https://www.naturalbalancefoods.co.uk

4. Sweet Freedom Choc Shot Orange and Freedom Marshmallows

IMG_1631

My porridge is already a fan of the original and coconut varieties and this one did not disappoint either.  To be extra decadent, I added a spoonful of cocoa powder in with the almond milk. It also wouldn’t be a vegan hot chocolate without a generous helping of Freedom marshmallows.

http://www.freedommallows.com

5. Sticky Mix Oat and Cranberry Cookie Mix

IMG_1850

Sticky Mix is right as I got in a right ol’ mess when making these but it was totally worth it.  The chocolate variety received in an earlier box went down a treat with my non vegan work pals and these Oat and Cranberry cookies were equally as delicious.

Bird’s Eye Review: The Vegan Kind May #TVK19

IMG_1715

Another month, another late review of The Vegan Kind subscription box. This month, as usual had some great products but I didn’t like them all.  Check out my review below to see what my thoughts were.

Chika’s Chilli Plantain Crisps 35g (RRP £1.39)

IMG_1739

These Plantain crisps were surprisingly yummy. Very crispy and the right level of sweet chilli flavour.  www.chikas.co.uk @chikasfoods

Sarelle Hazelnut & Dark Chocolate Cream Filled Wafer 33g (RRP £0.75)

IMG_1733

These wafers from Sarelle were indeed rather tasty.  A lovely light covering of chocolate and tasty hazelnut cream filling. `Would definitely purchase this little sweet treat. www.dolfinuk.com  @dolfin_uk
Ecobamboo Medium Toothbrush with Round Handle 0.03kg (RRP £4.00)

IMG_1743

I love the idea of a vegan and eco-friendly toothbrush and this one was rather nice to use.  The wooden handle feels comfortable in the hand and it definitely did the job although I would prefer a firmer brush but this is probably personal preference. www.ecobamboo.pl  @ECOBAMBOOPL

Olive Branch Mezze Sundried Tomato Paste 190g (RRP £2.99)

IMG_1723

I’ve not gotten around to trying this bad boy but so far I have liked every Olive Branch product that I have tasted. I look forward to trying this on homemade pizza and in pasta dishes. www.myolivebranch.co.uk  @OliveBranchFood

Good Full Stop Fruit and Nut Based Mint Chocolate Bar 35g (RRP £0.99)

IMG_1738

Another box, another bar but I have to say this was not my favourite. I really didn’t like the extra minty taste and it was just not chocolatey enough for my sweet tooth.www.goodfullstop.com  @goodfullstop

Taking The Pea Sweet Chilli Salsa 40g (RRP £1.50)

IMG_1727

Probably my favourite product in the May box, these Sweet Chilli Salsa flavoured peas were deliciously crunchy and incredibly moorish.  I ate the lot in one sitting. Oops! www.takingthepea.com  @Takingthepea

All in all, not my favourite box but still a solid effort with some great snack options.

Let me know your favourite products from The Vegan Kind boxes this year.

Bird’s Eye Review: The Vegan Kind March Box

IMG_1279Apologies for the lateness of this review. What the hecky pecky even happened in March??  I do know, however, that The Vegan Kind box held a delightful mix of products. (mostly edible). Here’s my review of TVK17. IMG_1283

Ananda Round Up (RRP £ 2.50)

I had already tried these Wagon Wheel dupes as I was lucky enough to get them for Christmas so was happy to see them again as although rather over priced, they taste like the non vegan originals. What more could you want? http://www.anandafoods.co.uk @AnandaFoods

Rebel Kitchen Chai Mylk 330ml (RRP £1.89)

IMG_1285It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Rebel Kitchen and again I have already tried this Chai flavour but this does’t make it any less delicious. A great fresh take on your average chocolate milk drink as it has a spicy Chai kick.  (see here for my review of this and the other products in the Rebel Kitchen range here). http://www.rebel-kitchen.com @rebel_kitchen

IMG_1290

Emily Fruit Crisps Crunchy Banana (RRP £1.99)

An interesting one. At first I really liked the taste of these satisfyingly crunchy banana flavoured crisps but then they became a little too greasy for my taste. Not my fave.

IMG_1287

Angelic Gluten Free Sea Salt Biscuits 150g (RRP £2.59)

These were a great surprise. I liked the Angelic chocolate cookies that had come in a previous TVK box but actually prefer this savoury variety. I slavered over some peanut butter and they were a great pre dinner snack.

IMG_1276

TheVeganKind Tote Bag (RRP £3.00)

And finally, who doesn’t love a tote bag? I have to admit to a rather large collection. They’re just so handy! So, I was extremely happy to find The Vegan Kind Tote amongst this month’s goodies. Here’s to more The Vegan Kind merch. www.thevegankind.com  @thevegankind

Bird’s Eye Review: Nakd Protein Crunch Bars

IMG_1501

You all know that I love a snack bar and I was lucky enough to be sent a selection of the Nakd Crunch bars from Natural Balance Foods for review.

As a vegan, I often get the inevitable questions about where I get my nutrients from. I’m a big fan of The Natural Balance Foods company as their snacks are healthy and filled with minimal whole ingredients and no added sugars or nasties. Check out this link on their website which describes five iron rich foods as well as some other tips for healthy snacking. http://www.naturalbalancefoods.co.uk/community/dietary-needs/five-fantastic-iron-rich-foods/

Like the original Nakd bars, these are packed with raw ingredients but also have soya crunchies for added texture.  Although I really liked all of the varieties, out of the 4 flavours, the Strawberry was probably my favourite as it was sweet and satisfying.  The Cocoa Crunch came a close second though with it’s subtle chocolatey taste and crunchy goodness.

Find out more about the Natural Balance Foods company and their many wonderful products here and keep an eye on their website as they often have some great offers. http://www.naturalbalancefoods.co.uk

The Vegan Kind February Review

Another late post for me, I’m afraid but here is my review on The Vegan Kind February box:

February Box of Goodies

February Box of Goodies

Inspiral Kale Chips 30g (RRP £2.19) – I find Kale Chips can be a bit hit or miss but these were definitely a hit. Cheesy in flavour and crunchy in texture. A great combo. My only complaint is that the packet wasn’t big enough! http://www.inspiral.co/

Inspiral Kale Kale Chips

Inspiral Kale Kale Chips

Organic Surge Sugared Almond Shower Gel 250ml (RRP £4.35) –  pleasant enough but I like a more powerful, magical scent when showering to transport  me to another place. Perhaps Hawaii? This didn’t quite do that but is a perfectly fine option with a reasonable price tag. Will be interested to try out some of their other products. http://www.organicsurge.com

Organic Surge Almond Shower Gel

Organic Surge Almond Shower Gel

Choc Shot Liquid Chocolate 320g (RRP £3.59) – initially this was the product I was most excited about and then I wondered what to do with it. So I checked out their website where they have several recipe suggestions. Toast, smoothie, porridge, pancakes. I made a chocolate almond milkshake and it was absolutely delicious. Can’t wait to try this out on my protein pancakes! www.chocshot.co.uk

Choc Shot

Choc Shot

Cinder Toffee 50g (RRP £1.50) – Incredibly yummy. All that a toffee should be. Super sweet, creamy and melt in your mouth delicious.  Can’t say anything more. http://www.1066cakestand.co.uk

Cinder Toffee

Cinder Toffee

Pressed Fruit & Oat Bars (Gluten Free) 35g (RRP £0.99) – I had the Blackcurrant flavour and was impressed with the intensity of flavour. It almost tasted like a healthy version of a starbust. The combination of the oats and fruit juices give this bar a point of difference from the highly saturated snack bar market. http://www.brawfood.co.uk
Braw Bar

Braw Bar

So, that’s it for this month.  A great box with lots of yummy products to try. Let me know if you have subscribed yet and if so, what products you’ve liked.

The Vegan Kind January Review

The Vegan Kind

The Vegan Kind

I had been enviously watching Youtube videos showing American subscription services for Vegan Snacks through the post and finally found a service offered in the UK. Forgive me for being a little late with this review but I’ve had a busy few weeks or so. My next post will explain all.

The Vegan Kind offers a monthly subscription box full of vegan goodies, everything from household and beauty products to savoury and sweet treats for the very reasonable price of £10 plus £2.95 p & p per month.

So, what was included in my first box that came in January?

Little Miss Meat Free’s Sticky Toffee Pudding Recipe Card

Such a good idea.  The Vegan Kind selected blogger Little Miss Meat-Free’s recipe for the English classic, Sticky Toffee Pudding. This is actually my boyfriend’s favourite dessert so I will be trying this out and letting you know how I get on.  It looks delicious.  Also, this means I have discovered a new vegan blogger, Katy and her website includes some fab dishes.  Be sure to check out her blog; http://www.littlemissmeat-free.co.uk

Perry Court Farm – Air dried Pear crisps

Pear Crisps

Pear Crisps

Hand picked from their farm in Kent, these are obviously a healthier alternative to other packeted snacks.  New to the world of the dried fruit, I was excited to try, especially as these have no added sugars but I have to say I was a little disappointed as they still tasted a little too sweet for me. However, if you want a snack on the go and don’t want to pick up a packet of crisps, then these aren’t a bad option.

Clearspring Organic – Dried Daikon

Daikon

Daikon

At first glance, I’ll admit, I didn’t have a clue what this was but after further investigation, I discovered that this intriguing little package is actually a giant white radish.  The accompanying handy recipe card gives some helpful hints for cooking this unusual veg and I will most definitely be trying it.  I love that The Vegan Kind allows me to try new things that I would never normally pick up so look forward to some new discoveries in the upcoming months.

Beond – Organic Acai Berry Bar

Beond Bar

Beond Bar

By now you should know that I am a fan of the snack bar on the go (sorry, didn’t mean to rhyme there) and the Beond range is definitely one to check out if you haven’t already. I hadn’t tried the Acai Berry one before and was pleasantly surprised at it’s refreshing taste and it managed to satisfy my afternoon sweet cravings.

Premae Skincare – Hand & Foot Cream

Hand and Foot Cream

Hand and Foot Cream

I love a good foot cream and have never seen this brand before so was interested to try it out.  Although, in a pretty tiny pot, I guess this gives you an opportunity to see if you like it before you buy.  I usually like my creams to have a little more scent but the consistency was good and sunk in quickly which is always a bonus.  Not sure, I’ll be rushing out to purchase this one though.

And my two favourites:

Considerit Chocolate Orange Mini truffle bar

Oh my my, this was good.  Sometimes I find non dairy chocolates to have a bit of a funny after taste and although good, do not compare to the dairy filled variety in taste. However, this little beauty is an exceptional treat. Creamy and delicious, I immediately looked up the website and set the link to my boyfriend. Let’s hope he takes the not so subtle hint for Easter. Although, not sure I can wait that long.

Landgarten Organic Dark Chocolate Pumpkin Snack

My other favourite for this month are these taste chocolate pumpkin seeds.  Great for some mindless eating and definitely a few more portions in here if you don’t get too carried away. These are extremely moreish!  Already went out and bought another packet.

What I also love about this subscription is that some of the included products also come with additional special offers so that if you like something, you can benefit from ordering at a discount. What a wonderful idea.

If that wasn’t enough, each month The Vegan Kind supports a chosen charity where 10p from every box sold goes to a featured cause.  January saw the Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary as the benefactor. What another lovely added bonus to this already amazing subscription service.

I have found the service to be incredibly professional, quick and helpful and would thoroughly recommend it to any new or established vegans or vegetarians who are looking to try new products and expand their vegan horizons.

Let me know if any of you have tried The Vegan Kind or know of any other Vegan friendly monthly boxes I can get my hands on.

New Product Alert: Nakd Bits

Always up for trying new snacks, I stumbled across the newest offering from the Natural Balance Foods company.  They of the famous TREK bars as well as the Nakd bars that you have probably seen just about everywhere. They are made with just raw fruit and nuts making them a great healthy, vegan alternative to those sugary cereal bars.

I love the Nakd bars – favourite flavours being the Strawberry Crunch, Berry Delight and slightly more adventurous Rhubarb and Custard, as they are perfect for a mid afternoon pick me up or pre-gym stomach filler so was excited to try these new Nakd Bits.

Box in the post

Box in the post

I happily discovered that the Natural Balance Foods website are currently offering Sampler Bits for the bargain price of £6.39 which includes Cocoa Delight, Cocoa Orange and Berry Delight. The box arrived extremely promptly (I think within a few days) and was surprised to see that they had also thrown in a few freebies as an added bonus.  Don’t you love it when companies go the extra mile to delight their customers?!

Box of Goodies

Box of Goodies

Close up - ooh!

Close up – ooh!

So as well as my original order, they had thrown in a Nakd Berry Cherry Oat bar and Nakd Crazy Cola raisins which that hark back to those gummy sweets of our childhood.

So, the verdict?  If you like the Nakd bars, you will definitely like these new Nakd Bits as they do taste exactly the same. However, the bite size pieces make these extra moorish and you are a stronger person than me if you can just stop at one handful.  They all have a distinct flavour and I love the combination of chocolate with the tang of the fruit.

Cocoa Orange Bits

Cocoa Orange Bits

These are the perfect snack for taking to the cinema or a bit of mindless eating lounging in front of the telly. I would strongly recommend checking out their website as they often seem to have tempting offers to sample their newest products.

Let me know if you’ve tried these and what your fave flavours are.

Thanks for reading.
