Bird’s Eye Interview: Tropic Skincare

Deluxe_Skin_Care_Gift_Box

After receiving some wonderful Tropic Skincare products to try, I was lucky enough to interview Caron Brooks , one of the Tropic Skincare Ambassadors about the story of the brand, it’s founder, Susan Ma, it’s great products and plans for the future.

Where did the idea behind Tropic Skincare come from and what is the philosophy behind the brand?

Susie [the founder] grew up in beautiful Cairns in Tropical North Queensland, Australia  with ‘green’ parents and a garden of mango trees and overgrown Aloe Vera plants. She was taught to never put on her skin what she wouldn’t put in her belly. In 2002 Susie and her Mother moved to London. She started making her own skin care at the age of 13 and when she was 15 used money saved up to buy 50 jam jars and filled them with her favourite thing in the whole world – a gorgeous body polish with natural Australian ingredients.

Since the natural ingredients of the body polish reminded Susie of her home in tropical Cairns, she branded it Tropic. Being passionate and determined about developing a range of natural beauty products, Susie devoted nights and weekends alongside schooling to study cosmetic formulating and continued to sell her products at markets.

In 2010 with a University degree under her belt and studying complete, Susie takes a long shot as one of 73,000 applicants for The Apprentice to secure investment for Tropic. Although being fired in front of 13 million viewers wasn’t quite her plan she saw no reason to stop trying.

After reworking her business plan she is invited to meet Lord Sugar again and show him her products and vision. To her shock and delight he invests!

What is your stance on Animal Testing?

We love animals and would never test on them. Every one of our products carry the Leaping Bunny symbol and are certified by the BUAV.

Who is your collection aimed at?

Everyone! Our products are safe to use on any skin type and any age group. We have men using our range. We are also certified by the Vegan Society. Pure, honest and effective are the principles that lie at the heart of everything Tropic do. The products are derived from 100% pure plant extracts, are honestly priced and are naturally effective on all skin types.

Susan was one of the finalists on The Apprentice (congratulations!), what did she learn from this experience that has helped her build the business?

I think Susie would tell you that it was an amazing experience which ultimately changed her life. She has always said to us never give up – don’t follow your dreams, chase them.

Do you see the demand for more vegan cosmetic and skincare products growing?

More people are becoming aware of what they are putting on their skin and want skin care that is both chemical and cruelty-free. We know that you don’t need to test on animals or use any animal derivatives to produce an excellent range of skin care.

Where are you currently stocked and what are your expansion plans for the future?

From the national launch of Tropic in on May 4th 2013 with 400 Founding Ambassadors to December 2013, Tropic now has over 2000 Ambassadors and is the UK’s fastest growing social selling company. This coming September will see more products introduced to the range. The range is not available on the High Street because the products are all freshly made in Susie’s Surrey Beauty Workshop. They can be bought from trained Tropic Ambassadors, like myself, either at Pamper Experience Evenings or 1-2-1 appointments or via our on-line shops. Information on the products, hosting Pamper Experiences or becoming a Tropic Ambassador can be found here www.tropicskincare.co.uk/shop/caronbrooks

What is your best selling product and why?

My best selling product is the Body Smooth – the first product Susie developed. It is a blend of the finest pure plant and essential oil to stimulate skin renewal while dramatically smoothing, polishing and energising the skin. Great for pre tanning.

What are the main ingredients in your collection?

The main ingredients are all pure plant extracts and essential oils. Ingredients such as shea butter, sea kelp, golden jojoba, coconut oil, avocado, mango butter, lime, magnolia, etc – I could go on!

What have you got coming up? Any new exciting product launches?

Yes we have a Glambassadors event planned for September where Susie and Lord Sugar not only give recognition to our Ambassadors for their achievements over the past six months but will also be revealing a new products. All top secret until then but I am really hoping for a few shower and bath items to add to the range.

Thank you so much to Caron for taking the time to answer my questions.  If you would like more information on the brand, check out their website: http://www.tropicskincare.com
