My apologies that I have been away so long. I have been in San Francisco for both work and play. It is such a beautiful city. So diverse, interesting and incredibly vegan friendly. Not only loads of vegan and vegetarian restaurants to choose from but it is great to go somewhere that really understands vegan choices and will gladly cater for you in any restaurant without just offering you a green salad and a disapproving stare.
We stayed in the Marina district which meant that my morning runs (3 to be exact) took place with the most spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Incredibly motivating.
So here are just a few of the restaurants I visited on my travels. There were so many, I have had to split this into two parts so you don’t get bored.
The Plant Cafe Organic – this is by far my favourite place for lunch or brunch and we went here a few times cos it was soooo good. I had the Sambazon bowl which consisted of acai berries blended with blueberries & strawberries, an apple/OJ blend, topped with seasonal fruit & granola. Oh wow. Firstly, it was a little like eating sorbet for breakfast but once I embraced this, it was yum. My boyfriend had the Huevos Rancheros which was tofu scramble, refried white beans, white, pico de gallo, avocado and tortillas. A little dinner like for my tastes but just what my jet lagged bloke needed for his first Californian breakfast. I have been told that The Plant Cafe also does the most delicious veggie burgers so I will be sure to check those out next time. http://www.theplantcafe.com/
Gracia Madras – a particularly famous vegan mexican restaurant in SF, I have eaten here a few times and am never disappointed. We started with Butternut squash and caramelised onion enchiladas which were particularly delicious and I had the special of the day which was Kale, beans, mushrooms and tortillas which I really enjoyed. The sangria ain’t half bad either. http://gracias-madre.com/
Ike’s Place in the Castro is a small, sandwich joint and I if you didn’t know it was there you would most likely miss out on this mighty lunch treat. Offering a huge selection of sandwiches, there is an impressive amount of vegan options. I had the wonderful “Vegan Handsome Owl”; Teriyaki, Vegan Breaded Chicken and Vegan Cheese and my bf had “Vegan Meatless Mike”; Marinara, Vegan Cheese and Vegan Meatballs. Absolutely huge and mind-blowingly delicious. Be warned though, these are HUGE and you may not want to eat for a week after. Somehow though we managed it…http://ilikeikesplace.com/san-francisco
The Slanted Window – I grabbed a late lunch at The Slanted Window . part of The Slanted Door restaurant group that I am told is always busy, this is the stall inside the ferry building. I had ginger tofu, jasmine rice and my fave broccoli and it was super. I even had enough for dinner that night too. I would throughly recommend checking out the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero as there are so many cute stalls, organic food stores and shops to check out and lots of vegan friendly options. http://www.slanteddoor.com/
So that’s it for Part 1. Part 2 will come later on in the week. Please let me know if you have been to San Francisco and your experiences and restaurant recommendations.
